The Alignment Myth: What It Really Means to Build in Integrity

‘Alignment’ has become a buzzword. Here’s a grounded take on how to actually use it as a decision-making tool, not a spiritual bypass.

Alignment is one of those words that gets thrown around so much it’s lost its meaning. For some, it’s an excuse to avoid hard decisions. For others, it’s a vague feeling they chase endlessly. In my coaching practice, I define alignment simply: Does this action honor your deepest values and move you toward your long-term vision? If yes, do it. If no, don’t.

I worked with a designer who felt ‘off’ about a high-paying client. On paper, the project was perfect. But the client’s values clashed with hers, and every meeting drained her. She kept saying, “I should be grateful for the money.” We unpacked that belief. When she finally fired the client, she freed up 15 hours a week—and within a month, she attracted two dream clients who paid more and respected her boundaries.

Alignment isn’t about waiting for the perfect situation. It’s about making conscious choices that build integrity over time. Ask yourself: What am I tolerating that I know deep down isn’t right? That’s where your next level lives.
